"Through the Slit," a Poem in Ukrainian by Anatoliy Anatoliy, Translated by Kalpna Singh-Chitnis

Through the Slit

Through the slit, light filters through,
every sight around, a different scene to view:
roads, fences, muddles, shacks, ragged fray,
hopes, circumstances, outcomes, losses, and reasons at play.

A small, mystic gate with a tear,
dividing life in two: before and after, clear.
Here, no change can occur, for all has stemmed from Adam's birth,
and something must be done before it's late on earth.

In the strangers near, do not look for a moral sign,
distant ones will follow their course, and that's just fine.
Through the crack, I count the trees in my heaven fair
through the slit, I see the abyss of other's hell and despair.

In the afterlife, churches and parishes are none,
white wolves howl, praying to steppe and spirits as one.
The chasm gazes at me from darkness
through a broken piece of a water mug hit by shrapnel.
