"Girl on the Footpath" a Bengali Poem Written and Translated by Tasneem Hossain

Girl on the Footpath

The traffic light turned red, and the cars came to a halt.

A sweet little girl in a red frock appeared from somewhere and asked,

'Sister, would you buy flowers?'

Turning toward her I saw her

Standing by the car window in worn-out clothes.

I asked her with a smile

'How much are the flowers for?'

Eagerly, she responded with her smiling eyes,

‘Five Taka only, for ten flowers.'

But as the lights turned green

The cars slowly started moving

The girl followed me and tossed ten flowers on my back seat.

I tried to give her the money, but the cars started to compete.

Somehow, she grabs the Taka from the back seat.

Cars rush past her like this on the road every day.

Who knows when she would be free from her life’s struggles?
